State Fair Dates:         Friday, Aug 28 thru Labor Day (September 7,2009 ) 

Lion Screening Dates:  Thursday Aug 27 - Sunday, Sept 6,2009

Screening Location:     Near Light Rail Entrance

Fair Entry Tickets:       The schedule for Lion volunteers has been provided to security located just to the left of the entrance gate.   Check in there before proceeding to the bus if you do not have a pass. Wearing your Lions shirt "should" get you in without at ticket. [at this gate  only]

Thank you 22C for letting us use your Vision and Screening Bus.  We will take good care of it!

                                                                                           

Getting there:  Park your car somewhere along the light rail system and park for free.  For Seniors, the Fee is $ .55;

Exit the Train at the Timonium (State Fair Grounds) stop. Several clubs are riding the light rail from their home club! 

Cromwell Bridge Riders will take about an hour to ride to the Fair on the Baltimore Light Rail System

The light rail area is very close to the vision and screening bus. It is approximately an 150 foot walk. Our location is near the Light BLUE RECTANGLE      BTW, rest rooms are 250 feet away in the Cow Barn building.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS   

  • Beltway to I-83 north toward York & Harrisburg.

  • Take exit, 16A or 16B (Both exit to Timonium Road). 

  • Left at Light onto Deerco & travel 1/2 mile.

  • On the right, look for the Park & Ride.  Not the "Kiss & Ride" area.  Park. 

  • Walk to the Light Rail & Cross over into the State Fair.

  • On the map (above), head to Light BLUE RECTANGLE area.

LIGHT RAIL  Avoid the $5 parking fee around the fair grounds, 

1) Parking is plentiful two stops down at the Lutherville Light Rail stop in  the Yorkridge Shopping Center, located at the end of Ridgeley Rd. near the intersection of York Road and Ridgeley Road. Old Navy, Loehmans and Borders are located in this shopping district. 

2) Park at Hunt Valley Mall.  The Mall has many shops & eateries.

3) Or, if you arrive early, free parking is available at the Timonium Light Rail Park-and-Ride (DO NOT park in the "Kiss-and-Ride" section)

The Fair Grounds is a lonely place without Fairgoers!.

GUIDANCE & INSTRUCTIONS

We welcome your support! Lion Clubs are welcome to take multiple shifts over several days and even share time slots with other clubs. Bring the Leo's, services hours can be earned! They can learn how to administer tests!

MANPOWER NEEDS    We need 6 PEOPLE PER SHIFT FOR TWO SHIFTS PER DAY.

Outside the Bus:  Two or three Lions can work the sign in table. Make the screening forms are filled, escort and explain the wait time and screening procedure.

FAQ

  1. We screen people older than 8 with parental consent

  2. Parents should be with their children at all times

  3. People being screened for Vision should wear prescription/corrective glasses 

  4. People being screen for hearing should wear hearing aides into the screening session.

Inside the bus, we need lions who can give visions test with Titmus 2s equipment and Welch Allen GSI 17 hearing test equipment.  

OJT    On the job training is available for those who wish to learn the bus's screening equipment. DVD videos are available for both machine for initial equipment details.

PAPER WORK    Audiology/Vision form will be available to score each person.  

    1)    We have a double sided form for vision & hearing and each customer fills in name, age, zip code and sex.  When the test's) are complete, the grading sheet remains with the screened person.  Passing and Referrer criteria is listed on the test forms.

    2) The Master tally contains the summary of each screening event.

 

TRAINING VIDEOS    DVD videos are available.  Each video covers the operations basics for the hearing equipment (GSI 17) and vision (Titmus 2s) equipment basics. Additionally, an audio CD contains the Titmus Operational Instructions. 

CONCESSIONS    We have to pay the price for being in the Fairgrounds. Pepsi's Aquafina water cost $25.96 for two 24 count cases (20 ounce bottles with blue rings).  J & V Ice sells a 40 lb bag of ice for $7.00.  Both Pepsi and J & V Ice will deliver.

Air Conditioning & Lighting    Vehicle light switches are on the left in the front entry way.

    There are three places to check for air conditioning.    On ceiling, center, the A/C control panel should be turned on.  There are two knobs--one turns the A/C on the other adjust the cooling.

    On the driver side, there are two A/C switching.  One is also in the middle on the bus, about two feet off the floor and the second is behind the hearing box. Please set the cooling temperature.

        Set Up Duties

  • Ah to dream!--Wouldn't THIS be nice!!Arrive at 11:30 AM to set up display 

  • Drag out & erect the 10 x 10 Sun Screen Tent 

  • Set Tent Tables & Chairs, 

  • Brochures & table forms are in a container.

  • Get ice for Water Chest ($7 for 60 lb bag and Pepsi Aquafina water is $13 for 32, 20 0z bottles)

  • Bus Duties -- Turn on the Air Conditioner and lights 

  • Hearing room lights switches on the sides of each light

  • Bus Key...Ken La Macchia has the bus key and will open/close the bus daily.  (C 443-857-0106)

        End of Day

  • Close down after 7:45 pm by breaking down Sun Screen Tent

  • Carry the tables to the rear door and store across the back of the bus (there is sufficient room behind the hearing booths); Place chairs & stuff inside the bus

  • Sweep up & Vacuum the Bus interior.

  • Turn off the Bus AC (3 items). 

  • HOWEVER before shutting the locked front door, put the key in the bus stairwell

  • Shut the door to LOCK THE BUS!

        Operational Concerns:

  • We are selling water for $2/bottle for CFII.  (Pray for hot weather).  Lions are asked to pony up a $1.00

  • Ice cube bags are sold by the Fair for $7 for a 40 lb bag. 

  • We usually have money donated, so we use that for the ice. And delivery on the go-cart is free! 

  • Pepsi has the State Fair the contract for food, soda & water vending items.  

  • Battery Charging-- We are not equipped to recharge personal scooters.  There is a scooter rental cart place but battery connections are not universal!

  • Bathrooms -- located inside the Cow Palace--Men's & Ladies room are 200 & 230 steps away!

  • Food-- inside the Cow Palace & all over...ps I like the Catfish sprinkled with Old Bay!

        Outside the Bus:

  • Greet customers & have the customers fill out the name & address portion of the form.

  • Completed forms stay with the bus and information is treated confidentially.  (HEPA)

  • Bring customers into the bus.  Customers may only want one test.

  • Customers are tested with current scripts, i.e. eye glass & hearing aides

  • Talk to family & friends waiting outside the bus

  • Most common questions is "where do I take my old glasses", hearing aides & such. Ask them where they live and often the answer is Lens crafters in the Mall.

The Bus

  • Coordinate Pickup with 22c

  •  Requires driver with "CDL" drivers license

  • Bus is stored in Lanham, MD (Off Washington DC beltway at MD 450)

  • Have licensed driver drive it to and from State Fair

  • At the Fair Grounds, hook up power from bus to land. Use State Fair Electrician to hook up the land power. Bus is equipped with a 50ft 2" diameter black cable with yellow plug going into outlet by front door. 

  • Bus is 50 AMP, single phase (cables stored in bus under carriage)

  • Hydraulic Levers level the bus (requires running bus engine & controls by driver's seat)

  • Run bus generator during week.  Turn on in front stairwell.  Toggle switch on outside & then open the drawer cabinet and switch rotary knob to "shore power".  

  • PS  a dead bus battery requires a good battery charger!!!!
